Why Microsoft OneNote won't install

Microsoft OneNote · com.microsoft.office.onenote

Microsoft OneNote downloads from AppLoko but won't install? Below is what in this particular build (16.0.20228.20214, 189 MB) can block the install, and what to do about each case. Everything here comes from the installation file we serve, not from generic advice.

Which Android version is required?

The first thing to check is your Android version. This build needs Android 13 or newer: on 12L and older the system installer rejects the package and shows “App not installed” without explaining why. Your version is in Settings → About phone → Android version.

How much free storage is needed?

The second is free storage. The file itself is 189 MB, but installing needs roughly 474 MB: the installer keeps both the package and the code unpacked from it on disk at the same time, and frees the difference only afterwards. When storage runs short the installer shows the same “App not installed”.

Does this build fit my processor?

This build carries native code for 64-bit processors only (arm64-v8a), so it will not install on a 32-bit phone. You can read the architecture in an app such as CPU-Z under Instruction Sets, or with adb shell getprop ro.product.cpu.abi. If it says armeabi-v7a without arm64, you need a different build.

Why won't it install over the Google Play copy?

This build is signed with the AppLoko catalogue key rather than the developer's. That is why it cannot install over a copy that came from Google Play: Android compares signatures and refuses, which on screen is the same “App not installed”. Uninstall the existing copy first, then install this file.

Which permissions will the app ask for?

After installation Microsoft OneNote will ask for dangerous permissions: POST_NOTIFICATIONS, CAMERA, READ_EXTERNAL_STORAGE, RECORD_AUDIO and 3 more. They are requested on first launch, not during installation, so denying them does not break the install — but some features will not work without them.

Has the file been scanned?

The file is checked: VirusTotal, 75 antivirus engines, no detections. Android's warning about installing from an unknown source is normal — it appears for any file that did not come from Google Play; to continue, allow installs for your browser or file manager in Settings → Apps → Special access.

What if none of this helped?

If none of the points fit, download the file again: an interrupted download produces the same error message. The checksum is printed on the version page, so you can verify the file before installing.
