NGL works through a link. You share yours, friends open it and send you a message without their name attached, and you answer on your story where everyone can see the question but not who asked it. The appeal is obvious to anyone who has been a teenager: people say things anonymously that they would never say with their name on it, and some of those things are compliments, curiosity or questions they were too shy to ask directly. Anonymity is also the risk, and it deserves stating plainly rather than being left to the small print. Removing names removes accountability, and apps built on anonymous messaging have a long history of being used for bullying, particularly among younger users. NGL uses Hive Moderation's automated system to scan messages for inappropriate content as a first line of defence, which is a real measure rather than a token one, but no filter catches everything, and a message can be cruel without containing anything a scanner flags.
