Speak Spanish: Palteca

Palteca differs from the language apps most people have tried in two deliberate ways. First, it does one language rather than forty. That focus buys depth: you learn about the differences between Mexican Spanish, Castilian Spanish and other varieties, which matters enormously in practice and which general apps flatten into a single artificial standard that nobody actually speaks. Second, the method is comprehensible input rather than translation drills. You watch real native speakers using the language in content presented entirely in Spanish, at a level you can just about follow. The theory, well supported in language acquisition research, is that you learn a language by understanding messages in it rather than by memorising rules about it. Children do this exclusively, and adults learn faster this way than through the vocabulary lists most of us remember from school. What that means in practice is that Palteca requires more patience early on and rewards it later. Translating word by word gives an immediate sense of progress that fades; understanding a native speaker at natural speed feels impossible until it suddenly does not.
