Pimsleur is one of the oldest and most tested language learning methods, and it works differently from the app-based approaches most people have tried. Lessons are audio, thirty minutes long, and designed to be done once a day. You listen, and crucially you speak out loud in the pauses, responding to prompts before hearing the correct answer. That speaking is the whole method rather than an optional extra. The core technique is graduated interval recall: a word is introduced, then asked for again after a few seconds, then a minute, then several minutes, then in the next lesson. The intervals are calculated to ask you just before you would have forgotten, which is the point at which recall does the most to fix something in memory. This is well supported by research on how memory works, and it is why people who complete Pimsleur courses remember material years later. The trade-off is that it is audio-first and speaking-focused rather than visual or gamified. There are no streaks or points, and progress feels slower at first than tapping through vocabulary matching. What you get instead is the ability to hold a conversation, which is the thing most learners actually want. More than fifty languages are covered.
