Sincerely works on a simple exchange. You write an anonymous letter about whatever you are carrying, and every night at eight you receive three letters written by other people. You read theirs, respond if you have something to offer, and send virtual hugs where words are not the right answer. Both halves matter, and the second may matter more. Writing something down and knowing a stranger will read it is a genuine relief, particularly for the things you cannot say to people who know you: the thought you are ashamed of, the worry that would frighten your family, the question you cannot ask without explaining a decade of context. Anonymity removes the consequence that stops people speaking. Reading other people's letters does something else. The recurring discovery is that a difficulty you assumed was uniquely yours is written down by a stranger in different words, and that recognition is why the app's tagline about not being alone lands. Answering somebody else also helps you, which is the oldest finding in peer support. A necessary note: this is a community of strangers, not professional help. It is genuinely valuable for the ordinary weight people carry, and it is not a substitute for a doctor or a crisis service when something is seriously wrong.
