Brilliant takes a position that sounds obvious and is rarely followed: you learn mathematics by doing mathematics, not by watching somebody else do it. Courses are built from problems you work through yourself, and the tutor watches where you get stuck, sketches directly on your screen and asks the question that unblocks you rather than simply revealing the answer. That distinction is the whole product. Being shown a solution produces a feeling of understanding that evaporates by the next problem, while working one out yourself with the right nudge produces the real thing. Formulas are treated as something you should end up understanding rather than something to memorise before an exam and forget after it. The range runs from foundational arithmetic and algebra up through university-level calculus, and sideways into Python, computer science, algorithms, data analysis, artificial intelligence, neural networks and physics. That makes it suitable for a school pupil in year six and a working programmer trying to finally understand what a neural network is actually doing, which is an unusual span for one app. The material was built by a team drawn from MIT and Harvard, and more than ten million people have used it.
