Key VPN – Secure VPN

The clearest reason to use a VPN is public Wi-Fi. On an open network in a cafe, hotel or airport, traffic between your device and the router can be observed by others on that network. A VPN wraps that traffic in an encrypted tunnel, so what passes over the local network is unreadable. Key VPN does this with a single connect button and a plain interface, and it works on both Wi-Fi and mobile networks. The permissions it requests are documented rather than vague, which is a good sign: VPN Service to route traffic through the tunnel, an optional boot permission if you want it to start automatically, and notification permission for the status indicator that Android requires any always-running service to display. Something worth understanding before choosing any VPN, this one included. A VPN does not remove the ability to see your traffic; it moves it from the local network to the VPN provider, who can see where you connect. That makes the provider's identity, funding and logging policy the whole question, and it deserves more thought with a free service from a small developer than with a paid one from an established company. For encrypting a hotel connection this is a reasonable tool. For anything where being observed carries real consequences, choose a provider whose policies you have read.
