Session - Private Messenger

Most encrypted messengers protect the contents of your messages but still know who you are, because they require a phone number to sign up. That phone number links every conversation to your identity, and the record of who spoke to whom and when, known as metadata, is often more revealing than the messages themselves. Session is built to remove that link. No phone number and no email address are needed. You create an Account ID and that is your entire identity on the network, which means there is nothing connecting your conversations to your real name unless you choose to reveal it. Messages travel over a decentralised network of servers operated by users around the world rather than through a company's data centre. That design has a specific consequence: there is no central store to be breached, subpoenaed or sold, because no single organisation holds the traffic. Messages are end to end encrypted, and the routing protocol is designed to obscure metadata rather than merely protecting content. This suits journalists, people organising in difficult circumstances, and anyone who simply objects to their social graph being recorded. The practical trade-off is that your account lives in a recovery phrase rather than a phone number, so losing it without a backup means losing the account.
