Chomp SMS has been around long enough to have accumulated the features people actually asked for rather than the ones that demonstrate well, and its user base of more than ten million reflects that. Customisation is its defining trait, and it goes further than themes. Notification LED colours, ringtones and vibration patterns can be set individually, which means you can know who has messaged you from a phone lying face down on a table by the pattern of the buzz alone. Screen appearance, per-conversation settings and signatures all follow the same principle: change what you want rather than what a designer decided. The feature list is unusually practical. Quick reply pops up over whatever you are doing, including on the lock screen, so answering does not mean leaving your current app. Scheduled sending covers reminders and birthday messages. Stopping a text mid-send catches the mistake you noticed a half second too late, which is a genuinely rare and welcome feature. A passcode lock protects the app itself, and privacy options control what appears in previews. Blocklisting handles unwanted senders, text snippets save phrases you type repeatedly, favourites pin to the top, and dual SIM, group messaging and improved MMS handling round it out. Backup keeps everything through a phone change.
