About this app
PairDrop for Android is a client for an open-source service that moves files between devices on the same local network. The service itself runs in a browser, and the Android version wraps it into the system, so a photo, document or archive can go from a phone to a computer without a cable, an email to yourself or a slow Bluetooth pairing. Devices discover each other automatically.
The main convenience is the tie-in with the system share menu: in any other program you pick PairDrop and a recipient, and the file leaves at once. Transfers go directly between the devices, peer to peer, and nothing is uploaded to a third-party server. The app contacts an outside service only to find other PairDrop devices nearby. The receiving side can be Windows, Linux, Mac, iPhone or another Android.
It fits people who regularly need to push a file from a phone to a laptop, and those who value open source, since the authors say the project has no commercial interests. Internet access is needed for device discovery, and both devices should be on the same network.
